A Typology for Reef Passages
نویسندگان
چکیده
Coral reefs host exceptionally diverse and abundant marine life. Connecting coasts sheltered lagoons to the open ocean, reef passages are important yet poorly studied components of these ecosystems. Abiotic biotic elements ‘pass’ through passages, supporting critical ecological processes (e.g. fish spawning). Reef provide multiple social benefits for islands their peoples, but so far neither characterized nor recognized multifaceted significance. This study investigated 113 across nine Pacific (Fiji, New Caledonia, Vanuatu). GIS-based visual interpretations satellite imagery were used develop criteria define three distinct types, mainly based on distance coastline presence/absence an enclosed water body. The discussion identifies ways refine augment this preliminary typology as part a research agenda passages. With next steps, will be extendable other regions better document various roles, biodiversity conservation sustainable fisheries management.

A typology for visualizing uncertainty
Information analysts, especially those working in the field of intelligence analysis, must assess not only the information presented to them, but the confidence they have in that information. Visual representations of information are challenged to incorporate a notion of confidence or certainty because the factors that influence the certainty or uncertainty of information vary with the type of ...

متن کاملTowards a Typology for Telemedical Services
This research-in-progress (RIP) paper presents a typology for describing and classifying telemedical services (TMS). As TMS are highly heterogeneous and complex, our objective is to provide an overview of TMS and to reduce the complexity of handling the highly distinctive TMS. Our typology is based on 13 well-described dimensions (e.g. purpose), each represented by a set of attributes (e.g. cur...
متن کاملVirtual communities, a typology
Virtual communities are complex systems interweaving technical and human aspects. We propose here to identify usual functions provided by virtual communities and define a typology based on the common objects or goals shared by their users. The papers included in this special issue show some examples of research works lead in some of these categories of communities.
متن کاملToward a typology for social-ecological systems
Characterizing and understanding social-ecological systems (SESs) is increasingly necessary to answer questions about the development of sustainable human settlements. To date, much of the literature on SES analysis has focused on “neat” systems involving a single type of resource, a group of users, and a governance system. While these studies provide valuable and specific insights, they are of...
